What is Influenza?

Influenza, commonly known as flu, is a contagious respiratory illness. Most people recover from flu, but the older people, young children and people with some pre-existing health conditions are at a higher risk of the more serious complications of the illness, including death.

What is Swine Flu?

Swine flu is a variant of the flu virus that was originally found in pigs in Mexico. The technical name of the swine flu virus is H1N1. Recently, the virus changed making it transmissable from pigs to humans. Once a human has the virus, it can be passed on directly to another human, unlike the previous strain of avian flu which could only pass from bird to human, not human to human.

Because the current strain of swine flu is transmissable from human to human, the disease is spreading rapidly around the world.
